Explore a Virtual Volcano

mtveseruption79ad.jpg

Click the picture above to learn about different kinds of volcanoes, what goes on inside a volcano…and you even get the chance to build your own volcano and watch it explode!

Based on the information, can you classify the type of eruption Mt. Vesuvius had in 79 AD/CE?  Make sure to explain your answer…

I learned a lot of great stuff like the kinds of volcanoes there are and if you change the temperatures and stuff on a volcano you can affect how it erupts.

[Who are you? And what type of explosion do you think happened in 79 CE at Mt. Vesuvius?]

Hi Mr.Bally!!
Your blog is awesome! I just created a stratovolcano, which is the same kind as Mt.Vesuvius & Mt.St.Helen's. The kind of eruption is Plinian (is that related to Pliny?), with huge clouds of ash and debris.

[Yep! Related to Pliny indeed!!]

This is AWESOME!!!!! Oh and I found out that if you put everything on high then a HUGE cloud of smoke appears and then a river of lava starts to rush down the volcano. Then if you wait like 3 seconds a thunder storm starts to create below the cloud of smoke. It kind of reminded me of Mt. Vesuvius because in the reading is said how there was a big cloud of smoke and that's what happened in mine.

ANYWAYS, ITS AN AWESOME BLOG!!!!!! AND THE VOLCANO THING IS REALLY INTERESTING!!

[Thanks! And good job on your comment!]

the virtual volcano was so cool. i did high both and the top of the mountain came off!

[Does this seem like what happened with Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD?]

hey mr. bally loved the, "make your own volcano" and would the things like the fumes etc. are they in a form of events, like does it happen as it happened in the simulation?

[All volcanoes are different but I think there is a pattern when dealing with the TYPE of eruption - like in the simulation.]

I loved making a volcano. I think I remade the eruption of mount Vesuvius (I am positive I did).

[What kind of eruption?]

Hey Mr. Bally,
the "make your own volcano" thing is really cool. I remember the kind that Ike made in class and made the same kind which was what you said the Mt. Vesuvius one.

i tried out the virtual volcano and learned there were three different types shield , cinder cone, and strata-volcano i had lots of fun switching the settings to see the different types of eruptions i really enjoyed the one similar to the one in Pompeii it was awesome.

[Which type was like the on in 79AD?]

I just tried the virtual volcano and it was truly awesome!!!!!! I put everything on high and it turns out to be just like the one that happened to mount Vesuvius. That type of volcano eruption is called stratovolcano. It seems to have the same type of stuff happen to it that mount Vesuvius did. Like smoke/fog, ashes, and some fire. It even says under the information part that mount Vesuvius was one of the most famous stratovolcano eruption. I think that blog is really cool and can teach everyone a few more big details about what happened during the eruption of mount Vesuvius.

This was so cool!!! When the thickness of the lava was on high and the gas pressure was on high the eruption was just like Mt. Vesuvius. There was a lot of ash and a storm. This is what Vesuvius was like.

I just created a stratovolcano by setting everything to high. It was very cool. First the top blew off and there was a landslide, and then debris came out (something about solidified magma bombs- please explain) and then there was something called a pyrocladownstic flow where super-hot gasses and pieces of rock come down the mountainside faster than 60 mph and scorch everything in their path (apparently these things are really destructive!) Then a plume of ash comes up and spreads across thousands of square miles. When the ash settles, it can be just like Pliny described- like snow- and even cover whole towns! Then there are lava flows (Yikes!) and lahars, which are dangerous mud- and ash-slides. This type of eruption is called a plinian eruption (Is the connection between plinian and Pliny just coincidence?) and is the most explosive type of eruption. It happens to stratovolcanos like Mount Vesuvius and Mount Saint Helens. THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME, MR. BALLY!

[Yes, there is a connection!]

Mr. Bally!! The virtual volcano created a land slide and a huge lightning storm. I really like how you can customize your own volcano so quickly!!!! (I put everything at its max) You rock Mr. Bally!!!!!!!!!!!

[Good job!...and Thanks!]

I set my volcano on low viscosity and high gas pressure and it looked really cool. I got Debris, fire fountain, lava flows and lava tubes. How do you make one that looks like Pompeii?
