How do they know about what things stand for? [Good question, but I do not have an immediate answer. However...I imagine that it is a very slow and difficult process to decode a foreign written language.]

That's really cool. I think that they probably had letters, like ABC, so they wrote the first letter of the word, and then they drew some sort of picture representing the rest of the word. They couldn't have written out the whole word with letters because my name, Talia, is 5 letters, but in cuneiform it's only like 3 symbols put together. And my middle name, Madeleine, is 9 letters, but I definitely did not see 9 symbols. [The only part that is being converted are the initials at the bottom of the page...enough for 3 letters.]
